Etude House Soon Jung Line Review – Whip Cleanser, Relief Toner, Cica Balm, & All In One Gel

Hello everyone! Today I’m bringing to you the 3rd and final Etude House Pink Bird post of the month, and this time on skincare! I’m quite excited to share this one with you guys, because it’s on a line of products I’ve been using and loving for a little over a year now – the Soon Jung skincare line! I’ll be reviewing the pH 6.5 Whip Cleanser, pH 5.5 Relief Toner, 5-Panthensoside Cica Balm, and Moist Relief All In One Gel.

The Soon Jung line was created specifically for those with sensitive skin, and contains 90%+ naturally-derived ingredients, leaving out common irritants like fragrance, artificial color, and parabens.

.。゚☆ pH 6.5 Whip Cleanser ☆゚。.

The pH 6.5 Whip Cleanser claims to be a mild, “weakly acidic formula” designed to cleanse your skin without stripping it and leaving it taut and dry. It contains Panthenol (related to Vitamin B5) for hydration, and Madecassoside (derived from the Centella Asiatica plant) for its supposed skin-healing properties.

Back of the bottle

Above you can see the full list of ingredients, also available here on CosDNA. Etude House claims the ingredients in this are 98.9% naturally derived!

The product is dispensed in an easy to use pump format. I find that one pump distributes more than enough to wash your face. My only qualms with the packaging are that for some reason the bottle always ends up feeling really tacky from slight leakage. This makes me think it might be leaking from the lower seam of the bottle (which I only just found out can be screwed open😅), so make sure it’s screwed tightly shut and put it in a separate ziploc bag if you travel with it just in case!

Like a few of the products from the line, this cleanser comes in both a large version (150ml) and a small version (70ml). I’ve finished the smaller bottle last month after using it for several – a little goes a long way with this!

The texture comes out as a fluffy foam when you pump it into your hand (my hot studio lights melted it a bit so it got really runny😅), and feels quite light when rubbed onto your face. I find that this isn’t strong as I like as an nighttime 3rd cleanser (makeup remover -> cleansing oil/balm -> this cleanser) on makeup-heavy days, but this is perfect as a morning cleanser/for days I wear little to no makeup. It’s as gentle and soothing as it claims to be, and my skin feels soft after using it instead of stripped like it does with most cleansers.

While I prefer something a little more heavy-duty for nighttime cleansing, this works very well as a daily product that does a great job of cleansing my skin without irritating it or leaving it raw!

The cleanser retails for 7,000KRW for the 80ml size, and 11,000KRW for the 150ml size.

.。゚☆ pH 5.5 Relief Toner ☆゚。.

Etude House claims the pH 5.5 Relief Toner contains 97% natural ingredients and is meant to soothe, hydrate, and repair sensitive or damaged skin.

Because of its soothing properties it’s the perfect toner for people who struggle with sensitive skin after being out in the sun, or if you get chapped, irritated skin in cold climates! I saw a review online that suggested putting the toner in the fridge and using it at the end of hot days, and I’ve really been enjoying using it that way. It feels so cooling and refreshing, and my skin drinks it up!

Full list of ingredients here.

This one comes in a whopping THREE sizes, 80ml, 180ml (above), and 350ml. The bottle is big at 180ml, so I’m quite curious to see how enormous the 350ml one must be 😂. I’ve previously gone through a bottle of the 80ml one in the past, but don’t have a picture for comparison since I finished it quite a while before I finished the other products I’ve used in this post, for a reason I will explain below.

In order to get the product out you just shake it over your hand, which is a great for sanitary reasons, but I always find I end up getting more than I actually need because of it. This formula is also akin to water, so it’s easy to end up with product waste if you’re not careful! As long as you’re careful when shaking it out you shouldn’t have any problem with it😊.

The toner retails for 8,000KRW for the smallest 80ml bottle, 13,000KRW for the 180ml bottle (pictured), and 23,000KRW for the 350ml bottle.

.。゚☆ 5-Panthensoside Cica Balm ☆゚。.

The 5-Panthensoside Cica Balm contains 92% natural ingredients, and employs a low-irritant cica, an ingredient that is also derived from the Centella Asiatica (mentioned above) that’s used to repair the skin barrier. It also supposedly helps with skin irritated from pollution and other damaging elements in the air.

This one also comes in two sizes – 15ml and 40ml. I wish I could show you a better size comparison, but if I unravel the tube it’ll split😅. As you can see, it’s well-loved! I use this on all areas where I’m experiencing a break out or rash. I also apply this every night to my jawline where I have rough texture and redness from my keratosis pilaris, and I can 100% say that this really helped me with that! I’ve yet to discover something that can get rid of it completely, but this really helps calm down the redness and improve the texture of it for me. With how long this lasts and how effective and affordable it is, I will definitely be repurchasing this!

The 15ml size is 7,000KRW, and the 40ml size is 17,000KRW.

.。゚☆ Moist Relief All In One Gel ☆゚。.

The Moist Relief All In One Gel seems to be a newer addition to the line, as I could not find much information about it online in English. This is also the only one of the bunch I hadn’t tried before!

This is apparently meant to act as a toner, emulsion, and essence in one, and can be used on any area of the body that needs some extra care and soothing. It also fights against the effects pollution has on your skin, which has been a big problem in Korea for the past few years.

Full ingredient list can be seen on CosDNA here.

I’d never used a multi-use skincare product quite like this, and experimented with different methods of application. On the first day I tried it by itself in the morning after washing my face, topping it with moisturizer and sunscreen. I found that with that method it wasn’t enough hydration for my skin throughout the day and I got oily on my t-zone pretty quickly, which isn’t something that normally happens to me.

On the next day I tried using my regular cleanser, toner, essence, and then this with sunscreen, using it to replace my regular emulsion/face oil step. That worked much better, and I found my skin felt nice and hydrated throughout the day.

It has a very thick, gel-like texture that spreads very easily over your skin.

It absorbs incredibly quickly into your skin, and leaves absolutely no sticky or wet residue at all! One thing I love about the Soon Jung line is how lightweight everything is – my skin just drinks the products up! Because of how quickly it absorbs I have found myself reapplying a thin layer once or twice during the day when my skin is feeling particularly irritated (which is a lot lately with how bad the air is here from all the wildfires!), and my skin feels cool and refreshed immediately after application.

At 12,000KRW for 120ml, where very little product goes a LONG way, I feel like this is a great product for those who suffer from sensitive, easily-irritated skin like I do! If that isn’t you, I’d say you can skip it because I find it doesn’t work great as a replacement product in my skincare lineup, and instead is best suited for targeting specific problems. Like the toner it’s another great one to keep in the fridge for instant soothing over irritated areas! I also like using it after washing my face after going to the gym, since sweat always makes my skin itch and burn😝. Having said that, I probably wouldn’t repurchase it because while I do like it, I find it basically has the same effect on my skin as using something like an aloe gel (eg. the Holika Holika 99% Soothing Gel), albeit better absorbing and much less sticky.

.。゚☆ Final Thoughts ☆゚。.

This line of products is seriously Holy Grail status for me. Another one I didn’t mention in this review, the 10-Free Moist Emulsion, has completely changed my skin and is my favourite hydrating emulsion of all time! I’ve gone through a bottle and a half of it, and will 100% repurchase it again and again when I run out. Out of this bunch of products I reviewed, the Cica Balm is another fave since it really helps to calm down my keratosis pilaris and other skin issues. The cleanser is also a great affordable daily cleanser that goes such a long way, so I can see myself repurchasing it to use as my morning cleanser once I’m finished with this gigantic bottle. The toner is a give or take kind of situation for me, not because it’s a bad product by any means, but because I’m so in love with my Klairs Supple Preparation toner that I feel like nothing will replace it at this point😩.

The line is so popular in Korea that various products from it have won several beauty awards, and it was recently featured as the best of the best on Director Pi’s ranking of 56 products from Etude House! They also expanded the line recently to include even more products which I’m keen to check out because of my good experience with the ones I’ve already tried!

Have you tried anything from this line? If you haven’t, does anything catch your eye? I’m not a huge skincare junkie because my skin is so finicky that once I find something I like I tend to stick with it, so I’m glad I found several of my HG in such an affordable line of products!

Phew, and that’s it for this round of Pink Bird posts! Etude House is experimenting with a new format where instead of doing just 1 review a month we do 2, but this review was a “special mission” that I couldn’t say no to once I saw what it was on😅. I’m still getting products together for my color series, so look forward to that! Thanks for stopping by, and until next time~ (`・ω・´)ノ
